2008 Lilac Festival Poster

     Artist’s Statement

Ruth Sauerbreit

Self taught artist, Ruth Sauerbreit, who resides in Mackay, Idaho presents 2008 Lilac Festival's poster art work. Ruth, considers "painting and drawing a very emotional sensitive experience," and holds the philosophy that "drawing is the basis of all the visual arts." Whether it is the region of Southeastern Idaho or various places around the country that she has lived and visited, it has been said that Ruth's work is "very direct, sometimes spontaneous, expressive, gutsy and free, and most always observing" of everyday life. This year's poster represents Ruth's feeling about Challis as it depicts the city's ambiance of nostalgia and yesteryear with an antique car in front of the old Jone's house on the corner of Eighth and North Avenues.
Ruth Sauerbreit is soft spoken, sincere and very friendly. Born in Oklahoma and raised in a large family as they moved from Oklahoma, to north central Texas then back to Oklahoma, she began drawing at an early age as a way of self expression and picked up watercolor and later oil after graduating from high school in Oklahoma. Ruth then moved back to Texas and went to college in Arlington. Later, with her husband, Dennis, she raised three children living in Ohio and later moving to Pocatello, Idaho. After an unfortunate accident, which claimed Dennis' life, she decided to dedicate herself to pursuing her art career further. Ruth started taking workshops and although primarily self taught, she has taken workshops from noted artists such as Carlton Plummer, Robert Moore, DeAnne Trublood, Kent Wallis and Joe Abreschia.
In 1988 Ruth married Nolan Sauerbreit. They bought a weekend home in Mackay which became Ruth's studio and they relocated there permanently in 2004 when they retired. Ruth works in oil, water color, and pen and ink. She does not prefer one over the other but the subject matter itself determines the medium she chooses to work in and she often depicts the same subject in all three medium. Ruth is most likely to be seen with her sketchbook in tote and constantly drawing. She says that "waiting for appointments are moments spent sketching people or objects in the room." Many times she sees something of interest while driving and must pull over to side of the road to sketch it. Ruth works on several paintings at the same time and she will even change a painting after studying it for several months. She has the need to get out of the studio once or twice a week to explore the area and by doing so helps keep her work fresh and alive.
Ruth Sauerbreit teaches drawing, watercolor and oil from her studio located at 103 Spruce Street in Mackay, Idaho. Her art is represented by The Stoneriver Gallery in Mackay and the Ciao Gallery in Wilson, Wyoming. Her mailing address is: Ruth Sauerbreit; 3974 W. 4100N; Moore, Idaho 83255.

The poster will be created in only one format this year. It will be on 11 x 17 paper and will be used for advertising and promoting the festival by distributing it regionally.
